Explanation of Screenings

Physical:

A physical exam is required for all K, 6th, and 11th grade students in the state of Pennsylvania. This exam can be completed by your family physician one (1) year prior to the grade and anytime during that grade.

The exam can be done in one of two different ways:

1.) A Private School Physical form can be filled out by your private physician and returned for the school file. The cost will be your responsibility.

2.) The physical can be completed at school by the school physician. The dates of the physicals can be found on the school calendar. You may be present for the exam. This is only a screening exam and if anything is deemed necessary to be further followed up you will be notified to have your family physician exam your child. Your permission is required for this exam.

Dental:
All K, 3rd and 7th grade students in the state of Pennsylvania are required to have a dental exam. The exam can be performed one (1) year prior to entering the grade or anytime during the that grade.

This exam can be accomplished in two different ways:

1.) A dental exam form filled out by your private dentist and returned to the health office.

2.) An exam can be done at school by our school dentist. You can check the school calendar for the date of the exam. Your permission must be on file for the school dentist to complete this screening and you are welcome to attend. This is only a screening exam so if any corrections are necessary you will need to have your child seen by your family dentist and submit a report for the corrections.

Vision:

All students in the state of Pennsylvania are screened for near and far vision. If your child fails either of these screenings, you will be notified to have your child's eyes further examined by an optometrist or optician.

Hearing:

In the state of Pennsylvania, students in Pre K 4, K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 11th grades are screened for hearing. You will be notified if your child fails this screening and you will be advised to have further testing on your child's hearing.

Height/Weight and Body Mass Index:

All students are weighed and measured during physical education class. Based on this information you will be notified of your child's BMI in a letter with an explanation of its meaning.

Scoliosis:

All 6th and 7th graders in the state of Pennsylvania are examined for scoliosis. This is a screening exam done during the Physical Education class by the school nurse. If your child fails this screening you will receive a notice to have your child further examined by your family physician. You will receive a letter in your school packet that explains this exam with the option to exclude your child from the screening.
